I am not quite sure how to disable "Wake-up proxy". I guess you would have to use "System Center Configuration Manager" for that.
If disabling both does not help, please run VBoxBugReport again with "Endpoint" and "Wake-up proxy" disabled , so I could check if their filters are indeed removed from the network stack. Btw, did you have properly working VirtualBox 5.
It is not clear from your initial description if "Host-only" adapters were ever assigned IP addresses successfully. I followed the steps you mentioned. I actually go to msconfig and disable most of the services including the Symantec one and expecting to disable the Wake-up driver. Upon restarting I tried to create my ethernet host and fail again. Here you go the logs. Not even once. I hope that respond your question, and I tried only 5. I came up with this idea.
I have one workmate that join the company pretty much at the same time I did, back in , we got the very same laptop model, same OS Win 10 and we were tasked to use VirtualBox , fortunately for him he can work fine with Oracle VirtualBox and he can create Host-Only adapters, I asked him to execute the VBoxBugReport.
Try to uninstall the antivirus completely. Simply disabling it usually does nothing of importance Replying to socratis :.
Well, ask the antivirus vendors if there's anything you can do about it. I mean if you have something so restrictive that doesn't allow you to install a driver, and that something is unremovable, there's not that much that the driver can do about it, can it? I would definetely try that, however as I stated in my frist comment today,I have one workmate with the same laptop model, same configuration, same symantec client, and he has VrtualBox, and he can create as many host-only adapters as he wants.
I guess it is time to bring out the big guns. Let's start with something least invasive. Could you download Process Monitor and run it on both hosts while creating new host-only adapters one on each host? The tool captures both registry and file accesses by all processes and produces tons of output.
Make sure you start the capture right before you trigger creation of host-only adapter and stop the capture as soon as the adapter is created you can use Ctrl-E in procmon window to start or stop the capture.
Save the captured events in native PML format, put the files into an archive and mail it to me as usual. Thanks a lot in advance! Replying to aleksey :. The issue is resolved.
Turns out that the Symantec antivirus was the cause of the issue, IT guys from my company noticed that the setup of the software was corrupt and we proceed to uninstall and reinstall it.
Thanks for updating the ticket and the forums! I'll mark the topic in the forums as "WorksForMe". Same issue for us here with Trend Micro Office Scan. We had to disable the antivirus, do a clean Virtualbox install, and re-enable it. For some reason, it started happening just after the update. I've just updated to Windows 10 and the issue related to "Querying NetCfgInstanceId failed 0x " appears again. I'm unable to create host only adapter in any way.
Replying to VincenzoS :. VincenzoS, as it has been mentioned several times so far, disabling the antivirus is usually not enough. If you can't get it to work, re-install Windows and install nothing else, except VirtualBox. I bet you anything that it's going to work.
I had the same problem but I installed VirtualBox version 4. In order to test my theory, I need help to find the correct way to totally remove these 2 remaining driver installations. Code 22 " Device description "" Driver assembly version "4. Device status "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor by Perryg » Fri Dec 16, pm Have a look in the device manager and see if they are listed. If so then uninstall them from there. Re: download vBox bridged network adaptor by phearce » Mon Jan 07, am I was experiencing similar trouble, but I think I have it solved thanks to the clue of the "Unknown device" with a VB hardware ID. So, there should be a matching 'hidden' adapter with "VirtualBox Bridged Networking Miniport" appended to the adapter name.
In my case, my there are five real adapters: wired, wifi, bluetooth, wimax, and most importantly one for my MAC bridge miniport. It appears that VB's installation first attempts to configure a matching hidden Bridged Networking adapter for each relevant adapter.
Again, in my situation this showed up as only my Mac Brdige Miniport getting a matching hidden adapter -- the installation never made it to adding a matching hidden adapter for the other adapters. In addition, each time I tried to manually add the Host-only adapter VB would manage to create a 'Unknown device' before bailing and giving me a "Failed to create the host-only network interface" dialog.
Before each step, disable virus protection. After each step reboot. Under 'Adapters' de-select everything. The fix for this bug was to try to figure out the metric that wouln't conflict with real interfaces. As a quick workaround you can manually change the metric for now see comment So metric is then. I was not sure what you expected since metric was already included in the netstat picture.
We leave this open then, right? That was the metric for the old, previously created host-only interface. My question was does it change when you create it anew. Did the workaround from comment:4 help? Thanks for clarification - it is 25 then. This was already a new adapter. I removed and re-installed it.
Or would you suggest it is an old adapter and with a new one the metric should be set higher by default from virtualbox? Metric is a new concept for me. I just tried the workaround and it worked. I was reluctand first because I did not find the exact network setting in my German Win It is just an easy step if you know where to search. So, thanks! I guess this solved the issue.
I would be interested in what the metric does, but I guess I will just google it. I recently discovered this as the source of an IPTV client not working. I'm posting this simply as a "me too" story and an argument that this probably could affect more people than you realize.
I get that multicast isn't required for video streams in general, and IPTV is a drop in the bucket compared to the likes of YouTube, Netflix, and Twitch, but I'm just trying to illustrate that IPTV-based streaming may occur quite commonly behind the firewall of large organizations. Comment 15 above expressed an attitude that IPTV is an obscure technology with "3 users".
I would argue that, while I can take a joke, there are likely closer to millions of multicast IPTV "users" who don't even know they are using it. It may even be possible that there are more people benefiting from multicast IPTV solutions than there are virtualbox users. Had the same problem: PC with VirtualBox latest 5. I have the same problem in my case, it's the multicasting that Minecraft uses to find LAN servers that doesn't work. The output of netsh interface ipv4 show config tells me that VirtualBox Host-Only Network has InterfaceMetric 25 , which is the same as what my hardware interface has.
I suspect this is the problem. I can fix it by manually setting the metric of the Virtualbox Host-Only Network to a higher value, but it would of course be nice if this wasn't needed. Making the VirtualBox Host-Only Network act as a Mbps interface would probably work, but that just feels like a dirty hack especially since it likely wouldn't work if the hardware interface would also be Mbps. Oh, forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 10 x64 with VirtualBox 6.

VirtualBox 4. But I am now wondering if installing 4. I have the old driver file lying around too, but the host-only adapters are enumerated correctly. To rule out any potential problems with the previous installation of VirtualBox 4. The only software I installed after Windows setup was VirtualBox 5. Directly after the installation without rebooting the system I did not have any issues with host-only network adapters.
I was able to add, remove and assign host-only adapters. After rebooting the system everything went back to how it was with the previous installation: None of the devices are enumerated, and I have problems with my existing VMs because none of the host-only adapters are properly assigned. I made an additional observation: I also can't assign bridged adapters to my VMs, and the "Check for updates Any VM that is launched and had a host-only adapter assigned before, gives the following error message on startup:.
I reinstalled Windows 10 once again and was not able to use any host-only adapters this time. Not sure why I could see them with the previous installation before rebooting the machine. I also noticed that VirtualBox 's command line tools will enumerate host-only adapters when querying for DHCP servers:. The update check problem is completely unrelated to any of this we know about that problem, we know what causes it. The "Nonexistent host networking interface" error at VM startup is consistent with the fact that 'list hostonlyifs' sees nothing.
No surprise there. The fact that 'list dhcpservers' shows the host-only adapter is very interesting though. This could be related to different ways of enumerating Windows network adapters. This won't help you any but I have another laptop upgraded from Windows 8. This one only ever had VirtualBox 5. I am getting same problem too. Please provide the output of "VBoxManage list bridgedifs" and "sc query vboxnetlwf" after you get the empty list of hostonly interfaces.
The big problem here is that boot2docker uses "vboxmanage list -l hostonlyifs" and then try to create a new host-only adapter. Then it checks again for the created one and fails.
Listing DHCP servers still provides details about host-only adapters though see below :. My Log file. For reference, could you all please note what Ethernet hardware is in your systems both wired and wireless? I never had any problems with my network hardware and previous versions of VirtualBox and Windows. NDIS 6. At the same time, Windows 10 clearly made a number of changes that broke things working on previous versions; one of those changes is that NDIS 5 is no longer available at all.
On top of that, Windows 10 was released more or less simultaneously with VirtualBox 5. Conservative people always let others work through the bugs first, but apparently there aren't enough of them :. And for good measure Or is reproducible on a completely clean Windows 10 install with no funny stuff? Are you able to get VirtualBox 5. As for the enumeration, it's just done quite differently.
And again no trouble with a clean install Windows 10 Enterprise x64 on an older Dell Latitude laptop. Sandy Bridge CPU. When I create a virtual machine it "aborted" when I setup a bridge network. But it does not aborted when I disable the network adaptor.
Replying to gabe. Please, this bug is about Windows and Windows 10 specifically. Your drive by comments about a Linux host are not helping. Thanks a lot in advance! Thanks a lot! Now it is clear that enumeration fails because we cannot obtain INetCfg interface. We will continue investigation to find the cause.
Meanwhile it would be nice if somebody else provided the log to see if others encounter the same issue.
I have the same problem. For kicks I installed AnyConnect but it failed to break the adapter enumeration. I didn't think it did or I'd ask you to try without :. It's clear that some systems without AnyConnect are failing too, and as far as we can tell that includes systems with no 3rd-party software.
I have run the test as defined above VBoxManage list hostonlyifs and whereas in other peoples log files they are showing many line of NetIfList issues between the output of the USB Unknown device and the host DNS information there is nothing in mine. It just shows:. Please, report the idVendor and idProduct to vbox. Andy: No, that's not a good sign, you probably ran an older revision.
Does the enumeration again work initially all those NetIfList lines and then starts failing "failed to acquire INetCfg interface"? Or does it fail even the first time? In both cases, the following lines related to the INetCfg interface are logged:.
Not sure about if this is related, but the following lines are logged only in the first case after the host machine was restarted :. The MediumWrap error is totally unrelated happens on working systems too.
But basically what I was after was what happens after the first "NetIfList: building the list of interfaces". And it looks like the first invocation works, but the subsequent ones consistently fail. On a working system, it works every time.
